Paper and Cloth Bag Production
The rise in awareness about environmental sustainability has increased the demand for eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags, such as cloth and paper bags. MIDS recognized this opportunity to support Self-Help Group (SHG) members in starting small enterprises for bag production. Through targeted training and capital assistance, MIDS has enabled women to establish successful micro-enterprises, creating a steady income stream and promoting environmental sustainability.
Key Activities and Achievements:
MIDS conducted paper bag production training sessions in Nagercoil and Sooriacode, equipping 25 women with essential skills for creating and selling paper bags. Initial capital support was provided to help these women set up their own bag production units.
Impact:
The promotion of paper and cloth bag production has led to significant benefits for the community. Women trained in bag production have been able to start their own businesses, generating a stable income and reducing their dependence on less sustainable livelihoods. The initiative has also supported environmental sustainability by providing alternatives to plastic bags, which are harmful to nature, wildlife and take longer to recycle. Through this program, MIDS has fostered economic empowerment for women, promoted eco-friendly practices, and created new market opportunities for cloth and paper bags.
