Livestock and poultry farming play a significant role in the rural economy, especially for the socio-economic development of weaker sections of society. Poultry farming provides self-employment, supplementary income, and a protein-rich diet at a relatively low cost. Backyard poultry farming is a traditional practice in rural India, characterized by rearing small numbers of poultry birds under a free-range system.

MIDS identified rural women interested in starting backyard chicken rearing and provided them with support.

Distribution
MIDS supplied Kairali variety chickens to 50 families in the Kaliakkavilai region, with each family receiving 18 chickens
Kairali Chickens
This variety is highly resistant to disease, lays 250 eggs per year, consumes less food, and is well-suited for the region.
Impact
Families are properly caring for the chickens, which is helping them increase their income and improve their livelihoods
